Like all of you other ECW fans out there, I was pissed off with what I saw on Friday Night. TNN. Man, I used to be pretty apathetic about Arena Football before. Now, I gots me a reason to really hate it. It scares me to think about what Paul is loading up for the next round of fire. It hasn't been a year and the relationship has deteriorated beyond repair. But it's on both ends though. I can remember back to that night at the Elks Lodge that ended up being the first TNN TV taping and how excited every one was. How Paul got in the ring and told all of the wild rabid fans in attendance at that show to stay up on their feet, keep cheering the entire show and the entire night would be used on TNN. There were fistfights in the crowd when someone sat down. Oh yeah, it was a night that that Levy feller came back and something with it being the Dudley Boyz last night In ECW as well. But, still that was a hell of a show.
Something happened over the course of the year to cause the situation get to the level it is now. TNN going after the WWF hasn't helped and in fact might have been the proverbial nail in the coffin. But, this was a relationship doomed to fail from the start I feel. As much as everyone tried to put over the fact that this might be "CBS Cable", it was still TNN. I can understand how they wanted to change their image of being "America's Country Home", but bottom line was still that its TNN. Last time I checked it was the Nashville Network. Image change usually dictates a name change; perhaps calling one's self CBS Cable might have helped. But then again any "network" that can invent a show called "Rockin Bowl", took off a television classic in "Dallas" and then has the highest rated program in its history and then doesn't promote it shows a lot. Why did this even happen in the first place? Well I guess that will be answered should Paul make an appearance at CyberSlam 2001.
Now that it looks like it's just a matter of time before ECW and TNN's relationship is viciously severed, there's been a lot of talk, speculation and innuendo as to where ECW might end up on a national level. Well there's been mention of taking over Monday nights on USA when/if the WWF goes to TNN, er, CBS Cable. However, not to say that Paul hasn't been justified in his latest rants against TNN, someone is missing sight of the big picture here. Playing the role of big time TV executive here, lets look at ECW for a moment. Looking at the state of ECW now, I don't see USA going any where near them, let alone something like FX or even Odyssey for that matter. Running only two to three live events a week, losing big stars off of the roster and having the alleged financial problems that are said to exist now aren't going to line up the suitors.
I won't even get back into my tag team belt rant again. Eh, what the hell, why not. There's the aforementioned alleged financial problems again. Welp, why not sell the tag belts on Ebay. That way you solve two problems; you have champions and make a couple of bucks. But seriously though, this entire situation has gotten beyond absurd. Lets look for a moment at Don Callis and his role as network representative Cyrus. The storyline had him want to pull ECW off TNN because his "man" Rhino wasn't the World Television Champion. Well, why doesn't he give a crap about the tag belts ???? This is kind of silly IMO. Get it solved very easily. Have Cyrus storm into Heyman's office, work area or have Rhino steal the belts from whomever. Then Cyrus puts the belts on "network stooges" Corino and Victory. Finally we have us tag team champions! Yay! Two great talents like Steve Corino and Jack Victory wear some much-deserved gold. Then as part of that angle have the other contenders attempt to get the belts from that faction. Yeah I know the last thing that Paul want to do is carry that angle along, but again, it's an idea. You have all of the existing teams try to get them back, even lay off of the Crash Holly 24/7 thing, taking it into the hallways and rest rooms of the buildings or up onto the roof tops. Then should a time come that one of the teams get em, they can preserve ECW's honor.
But then, what if Lou E Dangerously and the Dangerous Alliance get the belts? That can make for an interesting situation in its own right. But, nah, Paul and Tommy have all that covered . Right?
