Dateline Phoenix. The Philadelphia Flyers sent Eric Lindros back to the hotel prior to the game on March 13. This was due to nausea and dizzy spells and mental lapses due to concussions he suffered. Eric has suffered 3 concussions in 2 years and his brother Brett was forced to retire due to the concussions that he suffered in an unfortunately short career. Eric came back to Philadelphia and is being tested for another concussion and this could jeopardize his incredibly promising career.
Dateline Danbury. Extreme Championship Wrestling sends Jerome Young to the hospital to get tested for injuries suffered after overshooting tables when he and Vic Grimes perform yet another wild high spot. This time from a small scaffold above the O’Neill Center at ECW’s Living Dangerously. This is yet another injury that Jerome (New Jack) has suffered due to his high flying from various high perches in the venues that ECW has run in. Reports indicate that New Jack left the hospital and said that he was ok.
That in itself is incredibly amazing. Not to negate any of the injuries that Lindros has gotten over the years, but that says quite a bit about New Jack, the stars in ECW and pro-wrestlers in general. The abuse that these men and women put themselves through continues to amaze me. As the stakes get higher in the wrestling ratings war, it seems as though the boys and girls are upping the ante and putting their bodies on the line more and more.
Whether it’s a New Jack dive, Masato Tanaka taking an umpteenth chair shot to the head, Jerry Lynn taking a wild dive, another death defying leap by Rob Van Dam, Spike Dudley being tossed through a set of tables by Mike Awesome, you just have to cringe cause you know someone is going to be injured and injured badly. Oh, yeah, wait a moment. Spike, RVD and JL are off the ECW roster temporarily due to some nasty injuries. It’s due to the constant level that they put themselves through to bring the fans more bang for their buck, but what are the long-term effects?
One of the highlights of “Beyond the Mat” is seeing how Terry Funk gets out of bed in the morning. The abuse that he’s put himself through over the years and seeing its effects. Did Mick Foley “ retire” in time before any long damage has been done to his body? I hope so. Another one of the fine columnists on the Internet wrote about how no one gave a crap about Mick Foley until the hell in the cell match up. That’s right, now he is leaving the business in time. I haven’t mentioned Steve Austin or the Undertaker.
I mention all of this because of a movie that is opening this coming Friday. In fact it’s been playing in several cities now. This movie is called “Beyond the Mat”. If possible, it should be made mandatory for each and every wrestling fan to see this movie. There’s one group of fans I really want to be able to view this movie. Those “fans” at the ECW Arena and at other ECW shows and any wrestling show that chanted “ You Fucked Up”. Take a look at how these people put their bodies on the line for you all night in and night out and a small mistake is made and you dare chant that? C’mon. See that movie and then try what they try and then talk to me and dare chant that.
Now, onto other updates.
