November 2 Remember ’97
Monaco,PA
Golden Dome
11-30-97
We are live just outside of Pittsburgh, PA for the 5th annual November 2 Remember. Joey Styles is in the ring for the intro. He tells us that this is the largest crowd in ECW history at that point. He promises this WILL be a November 2 Remember.
Cue intro….
We come back to the former Fantastic, Tommy Rogers, making his way to the ring. His opponent….."Mr. No Gimmicks Needed" Chris Candido, sans Tammy Lynn Sytch, who was still riding high as "Sunny" the WWF at this point.
Chris Candido vs. Tommy Rogers
Feeling out process to start things. Nice chain wrestling follows. Both men are up in each other's faces now. More basic wrestling maneuvers by Rogers. Crowd is chanting "boring". Things begin to pick up now with a number of counters by both men. Rogers is taking control of the match. He ends up outside the ring on the apron where Candido tries for a suplex back into the ring. Rogers reverses and Candido goes crashing to the floor. That warrants an "E-C-W" chant from the crowd. Back inside the ring now, Rogers with a camel-clutch. Candido muscles his way out, but Rogers counters. Candido with a beautiful Ted Dibiasi-like powerslam. Candido with a leg drop off the second rope, which gets a near fall. Candido chops Rogers in the corner, which brings a loud "Wooooooooo!!!!!" from the crowd. Candido acknowledges it with a Ric Flair strut, instantly garnering my approval. Rogers up top, but Candido hits a rana. Triple Threat prospect Lance Storm is out and attacks Rogers. Double teaming by Storm and Candido until Jerry Lynn runs in to help his tag team partner at the time, Tommy Rogers. Lynn cleans house. Jerry with a nice plancha to the outside on Storm. Candido now with a plancha off the top rope onto Lynn. Rogers with the same onto all 3 on the outside the ring. Suddenly this has turned onto a tag team match featuring….
Chris Candido/Lance Storm vs. Jerry Lynn/Tommy Rogers
Lynn and Rogers are going to town on Storm and Candido. Lynn up top, but gets caught by Storm and knocks him off. Storm to the top rope and accidentally catches Candido with a dropkick. Lynn is back in and gets caught up top by Storm again. Candido goes for the top rope powerbomb and hits it. Rogers makes the save on the pin. However, Candido hits a northern lights suplex with a bridge for the win. Candido and Rogers one on one never really got going. Once it turned into a tag match it was pretty good. ** for the whole thing.
Justin Credible w/ Jason vs. Mikey Whipwreck
Credible is still within the first few months with the company at this point. He takes control to start. Mikey reverses an Irish-whip and Credible does a Flair flip into the corner and gets knocked to the floor. Brawling on the outside ensues. Back in the ring, Credible hits a swinging DDT and is control once again. Credible gets caught on the top rope and Mikey hits a nice rana off the top. Jason interferes and Mikey takes him out. The combo of Credible and Jason is too much for Mikey though. Jason holds Mikey while Credible goes up top. Mikey with a low blow on Jason and catches Credible on the top rope again. Whippersnapper off the top! 1…2…3. I liked that match a lot. ***
TV Title Match
Taz vs. Pitbull #2 w/ Lance Wright and Pitbull #1
Paul E. is at the broadcast booth to do commentary for this one. Pitbull #2 overpowers Taz to start. He hits a massive powerbomb on Taz. He follows it up with a spinning heel kick and a shoulder block off the top for a two count. Pitbull #2 goes for a press slam, but Taz floats over and hits two Tazplexs. Taz hits the Tazmission early for the victory. Pitbull #1 is in the ring and gets hit with another Tazplex. Taz takes the mic and insults Lance Wright. Former WWF prospect Brakkus is at ringside. Taz challenges him, but a security guy holds him back. Taz slaps the security guy and puts the Tazmission on him. Paul E. screams to cut away from what is happeneing as we go to past footage of Spike Dudley getting thrown into the crowd by Bam Bam Bigelow. Match was extremely short, but the post match angle was pretty cool. *
World Tag Team Title Match
FBI vs. Balls/Axl vs. New Jack/Kronus vs. The Dudleys
Gertner does usual Dudley's introduction, except this time he's Joel "So big it's hard to keep from hurtin her" Gertner. The FBI consists of Guido and Tracey Smothers at this point with Tommy Rich as their manager. Balls and Axl waffle the Dudley's from behind to start. They do the same to the FBI. New Jack/Kronus are not out as of yet. Balls and Axl are in control of everyone. Big Dick Dudley is in the ring now as he chokeslams Axl. This allows Buh Buh to hit a huge Samoan drop on Balls. FBI with some nice double teaming on Axl. Buh Buh with a superplex off the top on balls and Devon hits a diving headbutt. Cue "Natural Born Killaz". Finally, out come the Gangstanatas. New Jack throws the can-o-weapons in the ring and all hell breaks loose! Everyone is hitting each other with weapons. Too much action to call. All I know is that practically everyone in the match is busted wide open. Big Dick is in and helps Devon gain control over Kronus while everyone else is brawling on the outside. Dick gets nailed over the head with a New Jack guitar shot and Kronus hits the 350 splash. Everyone is brawling on the outside while Buh Buh is left in the ring alone. He hits the ropes, runs, and hits a plancha over the top rope onto everyone outside the ring! That was pretty impressive I have to say. New Jack goes to the top rope with a guitar as Tommy Rich comes into the ring. New Jack waffles him with the guitar. Rich gets right back up and looks like he's going to convulsions. Rich is bleeding all over the place. Kronus goes up top, but dives right into a Buh Buh cutter, eliminating Kronus/New Jack. We continue with Balls and Buh Buh in the ring. Guido comes in as well and Buh Buh picks him up and shoots him into the corner like a lawn dart. Buh Buh and Balls are back at it as Gertner accidentally throws powder into Buh Buh's eyes. Buh Buh is blinded as Balls picks up Devon and Buh Buh and Balls hit the 3D. Axl covers Devon for the pin, eliminating the Dudleys. We're down to two teams. Balls and Axl are going to town. Balls goes for the Nutcracker suite which catches the ref in the head. In comes evil referee Jeff Jones. Jones hits Balls low and Guido roles him up for a fast counted pin. Good brawl. **1/2
RVD w/ Fonzie vs. Tommy Dreamer w/ Beulah
Beulah is looking only as she can look, which is great as usual. This match billed as the WWF vs. ECW in a flag vs. flag match, which was an ongoing angle at the time. The winner gets to raise the flag of the respective promotion they "represent". ECW is represented by Dreamer of course, and the WWF by RVD, who is still known as Mr. Monday Night at this time. Both men counter each other to start, and surprisingly Dreamer is hanging in there nicely with RVD. Dreamer goes for his DDT finisher, but RVD gets out of the ring quickly and is hit by a baseball slide from Dreamer. Dreamer sends RVD into the first row and throws him back just as quickly. Brawling on the outside, and Dreamer is getting the better of RVD. Back in the ring RVD takes control with the help of Fonzie. RVD sets up a chair on the apron, but is driven into it with a Dreamer dropkick. RVD has his eye busted open as a result. RVD back in control in the ring. He sets Dreamer in the corner and dropkicks a chair into him. RVD is just showing off his wide array of moves at this point. Dreamer catches RVD who is now set up upside down in the corner. Beulah hands Dreamer a chair as he does a baseball slide into RVD. Fonzie turns the tide though by nailing Dreamer on his then broken heel. RVD goes for the split legged moonsault, but Dreamer pulls the chair up and catches RVD. Reversals by both men. RVD gets caught by a Dreamer DDT off the top rope. Dreamer goes for the pin, but Fonzie pulls the ref out of the ring and hits him with a stop sign. Out come a number of refs, including Jeff Jones, who continually breaks up the attempted three counts of other referees. Jones decks the both refs. Jones now wants to fight both the refs that he just knocked out. With his back turned, Jones gets low blowed by Beulah, which leads to a double DDT by the other two refs. Fonzie comes in and takes out the two refs, who gets taken out himself by Beulah. Dreamer hits the piledriver on RVD, and then hits the DDT. Dreamer grabs the ECW flag and raises it. He is then distracted at ringside by Doug Furnas and Phil Lafon. Out of nowhere, a returning Stevie Richards superkicks Dreamer into oblivion. Lafon drapes a garbage can over Dreamer as RVD hits the 5 star frog splash. Fonzie announces RVD as the winner and drapes the WWF flag over the top rope. A table is now brought into the ring and Dreamer is put on it. The WWF flag has been draped on Dreamer. Sabu makes his way out. Sabu goes up top and clotheslines Beulah! Dreamer falls off the table and lays ontop of Beulah to protect her. Yeah, that would be my excuse too. Hehe. I loved this match, despite the non-finish. ***1/2 As Dreamer is lying on top of Beulah….cue "Enter Sandman. This leads to…..
Tables and Ladders Match
Sabu vs. The Sandman
Sandman does his usual five minute entrance. Sandman climbs up a ladder set up outside the ring to have a few rounds, but is dropkicked off by Sabu. Sabu goes to work on the Sandman inside the ring. Sandman throws Sabu outside the ring. He grabs a ladder, does a running jump over the top rope, and nails Sabu with the ladder. Sandman goes to throw Sabu into the rail, but Sabu reverses and then hits air-Sabu. Sandman with a slam on Sabu on the concrete. Table suplex by Sandman. He lays Sabu on a bridged table, and pounds on Sabu, which breaks the table. Sabu is put onto another bridged table. Sandman goes to the top rope and does a legdrop onto Sabu on the outside. Sandman sets a portion of the broken table on the rail. He attempts to throw Sabu into it, but Sabu reverses and Sandman does a somersault through the table. Sandman is put on a bridged table and Sabu does a legdrop from the inside of the ring onto him on the outside. Back in the ring finally and Sabu goes to work on Sandman. Sabu throws a ladder at Sandman's head. Back on the outside, Sandman is set up a table. Sabu takes a ladder and goes up top. Sabu drives the top of the ladder into Sandman's chest. Sandman battles back and sets Sabu on another bridged table, but misses an attempted somersault and goes crashing through the table himself. Sabu gets caught on the top rope, and is suplexed into a ladder by Sandman. To show you how stiff these guys are working, the back of Sandman's head is bleeding. Sabu grabs a fork from his boots and repeatedly stabs Sandman in the forehead with it. Sandman nails a somersault off the top onto Sabu, who has a ladder on top of him. Sabu is put on a bridged table once again. Sandman climbs the ladder inside the ring and does an insane somersault onto Sabu. Crowd was on their feet for that one. Fonzie is now up on the apron with Sandman's cane. Sabu throws fire at Sandman, but Sandman moved. Sandman grabs Fonzie, but Sabu nails a kick to his head off the top. Sandman is now set up on a bridged table and Sabu drives a ladder off the top rope into him. Sabu then hits an atomic arabian face buster with the ladder on Sandman inside the ring and gets the pin. That was an incredibly stiff and brutal match. Didn't flow all that well, but I have to give both men credit for how brutally stiff they worked. ***
ECW World Title
Bam Bam Bigeloww vs. Shane Douglas w/ Francine
Douglas is in his hometown as the challenger. Francine is on crutches, with a hairline fracture of her pelvis. Both men are nose to nose to start as the crowd rallies behind Douglas. Bigelow shows some power moves. Bigelow dominates early. Douglas comes alive though with a series of punches and kicks in the corner. It was not for long though as Bigelow catches him with a plash in the corner. Bigelow is just overpowering Douglas. Douglas goes for a plancha off the second rope, but Bigelow catches him and drives him to the mat. Both men to the outside. Bigelow drives Douglas into the ringpost, and then into the rail. Back in the ring, Bigelow reverses an attempted suplex by Douglas. Bigelow picks the Franchise up and dumps him over the turnbuckle to the outside. Bam Bam sets up a table in the ring and puts Douglas on it. Bigelow goes for a moonsault, but Douglas powerbombs Douglas through the table. Douglas has Bigelow reeling, and clotheslines him to the outside. Douglas jumps onto Bigelow, but Bigelow powerbombs him through a table on the outside. Bigelow pounds on Douglas on the corner and shoves the ref. Douglas is busted open. Triple Threat members Chris Candido and Lance Storm try to make their way to the ring, but are stopped by security. Bigelow picks up Douglas and throws him onto them outside the ring. Candido and Storm are ushered to the back. Back in the ring, Francine attempts to hit Bigelow with a crutch. Bigelow grabs the crutch and swings for a homerum. Lucky for Francine, she ducked. Now Bigelow nails the Franchise with the crutch multiple times. Douglas hits the belly to belly out of nowhere, but can't follow up for the pin. Bigelow quickly regains control. He goes to powerbomb Douglas through the table, but Douglas reverses and hits the belly to belly on Bigelow through the table for his third world title. Match was actually a lot better than I remember it being. *** Douglas is hurt as we fade to black.
A lot of people didn't like this edition
of N2R, but I really enjoyed it. That's probably because it was the first ECW
PPV I ever saw. Either way, it wasn't quite as good as previous N2R's, but is
very good nonetheless.
